Meaning: of uncertain meaning though it could be related to Welsh gwaredd meaning "gentle" or "gentleness".

It could also be derived from Gweiryyd, composed of Old Welsh gweir (meaning "grass" or "hay") + iud(d) (meaning "lord"). It could also be derived from Old Welsh gwrhyt meaning "valor".

In Arthurian legend Gareth is one of the Knights of the Round Table, brother of Gawain, the son of Morguase and Arthur's nephew, who is accidentally killed by Lancelot during the rescue of Gunievere.
