Sevilla
Origin: Phoenician, Spanish
Meaning: the name of a city in Spain, the capital of Andalusia. It has a long history of colonization by various civilizations, first colonized by the Phoenicians, naming it Spal meaning "lowland" in the Phoenician language. During Roman rule, the name became Hispalis and then adopted as Isbilia when the Moors took over, which eventually became Sevilla during Spanish rule.
According to legend, Sevilla was originally founded by the Greek demigod Heracles, who was often identified with the Phoenician god Melqart.
