Origin: Germanic

Meaning: usually a short form for Charles which comes from Germanic name Karl from a Germanic word meaning "man", used to refer to men who were not thralls or servants but who still lived at the bottom of society so it connotes the idea of a "free man".


I've also seen another theory in which it could be derived from Germanic element hari meaning "army, warrior".

Chuck could also be used as a short form for Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, making it a unisex name.

As a surname, Chuck seems to originate from an Anglo-Norman French chouque meaning "tree stump", either referring to someone who lived near a tree stump, or a nickname given to someone with a stocky build.

Chuck is also an English word referring to throwing something quickly.
